And They're Off

Drew has just set sail down the Beagle Channel in Argentina (6pm local time). In six hours (midnight local time) he will begin the Drake Passage crossing, heading for Antarctica at last!!! Who would have thought, all those years ago, that something like this would happen to him when he was 18?!

I've had so much to catch up on Mare after having a little break from the 'screen'.
I can't begin to imagine the excitement of Drew, what an incredible experience for him. You must be so proud. Hasn't this year flown by though, I remember clearly you counting down to his departure, now he's almost home again.
I think I need Meg to give me some macaron-baking tips. I only ever tried the once, but couldn't get the 'feet'. Hers are perfect! Must be that old Kenwood Chef, my Mum's is exactly the same, and knocked up more than one pav over the Christmas period. Makes a noise to wake the dead, but must be over thirty years old. I only ever tried the cake pops once too. They were a huge hit with the kids, but fairly time-consuming I thought. Tell Meg to go back to baking her own gingerbread next year, we've finally worked out that the thinner and crisper the better to have it stay in shape. And I think it tastes better than the slightly soft thicker variety. We've still got a couple of hams in the coldroom, am thinking I'll have a go at glazing one and baking it, could almost taste yours from the photo.
Who took the photos of the kids bathing in the flexi-tubs? What beautiful shots.
Wishing you all a wonderful 2012 and looking forward to hearing about Drew's latest amazing adventure. Take care all.
PS. I got a bike for Christmas Mare. Thought of you immediately.
I also got an e-book reader, which I absolutely love, though as an ardent book lover, you may not approve. It's just so convenient. I struggle to house books in my very small abode, but is taking some time getting used to the feel of it, compared to holding a book. I can see them becoming very useful in schools/unis etc, as a replacement for hefty textbooks.
