Day 4 CQ2012 Maryborough to Hervey Bay

Tuesday September 11, 2012

Hello 50! You're here - thanks for coming!

Leona gave me a bag that she'd made and a little canvas print of our favourite cycling photo on an easel - it's the one she used as the "letterhead" when the sponsorship letters went out. I think it's a classic!

Breakfast was hash browns, scrambled eggs and onions. Each morning I force myself to also eat half a cup of bircher muesli, just to give myself plenty of fuel in the tank. I have to chew it 50 times before I can swallow it.

Here I am on the morning I turned 50, heading out the gate.

We didn't leave camp until 8am so as to allow the worst of the traffic to be gone (not sure that theory worked). The road out from Maryborough was extremely busy and a little nerve wracking at times. However, we made it to our morning tea stop at Dundowran.

I had been feeling a bit sad at breakfast that I wasn't with any of my family on my big day - but then I thought (and said to LB) that I'd rather be on the bike ride because if I was home, there'd be no-one there anyway - Gibbo would be at Surat, the kids would be away and I'd be at work. So at morning tea I was sitting on a stump, staring at the ground, trying to force a mushy banana down.

And then it happened.

I looked up - and there, holding hands and creeping through all the cyclists were these two - I looked at them but I couldn't believe what I was seeing - I looked away, then back again and they were still there, standing in front of me giggling!! I think I gave a little scream or said "oh no" or something and then burst into tears!!

I couldn't stop hugging and kissing them!

Apparently the visit was all worked out two weeks ago and LB knew all about it. Meg got into my phone and got her number and L let her know where we'd be on the day. They were going to meet us at lunch or the campsite but they arrived earlier than expected. L had been on the phone to them when they were about 10 minutes away and they told her to wait so she stalled a bit by standing in a long line for a cup of tea. I had been a bit preoccupied and didn't notice anything unusual. They parked illegally and ran down the hill to where we were! What an amazing surprise - the biggest one in my 50 years! Drew had got a bus to Meg in Twba last night, then they drove to Dalby and stayed with Mum and G came in for tea. Mum was going to come too but she woke up feeling sick so they left her behind.

After all the excitement we headed off to the lunch break which was only down the road; when we got there we decided to keep going and meet the kids at a little cafe they had seen earlier. There was a rather nasty little hill to get up first though.

The four of us had a lovely meal at the little cafe. I have photos but they're on Meg's camera. There was a swooping magpie in the trees overhead; Drew helped a little old lady across the road. After a really happy lunch we cycled (and the kids drove) the few kms to the campsite. I took them around and showed them everything - my tent, where everything is, how it all works etc. We went for a walk along the beach and collected some coral and shells.

Too soon it was time for them to leave. I didn't' want them to leave but I was anxious about the long drive back. They made it back to Mum's about 7pm and then continued on through to Twba.

LB having a swing and emailing.

That night at dinner, during the evening roundup, it was mentioned that Maryanne had had a special birthday today - and if anyone had seen her crying at morning tea - well she cried all the way to lunch and the campsite as well - because her kids had driven from the Darling Downs to meet up and surprise her. They don't normally announce birthdays but when LB went and told them they asked her was it a special birthday etc - so they decided to go with it.

What a fabulous way to turn 50! Riding my bike with my friend and having my kids surprise me with a visit. Totally, totally awesome.

Day 3 CQ2012 Biggenden to Maryborough

Monday September 10, 2012

A pleasant 84km to Maryborough today although headwinds hampered me a bit. I'd rather ride up a hill than ride into a headwind. I sat behind an older gentleman for about the last 10km into town until he pulled over for a drink.

This was my afternoon snack when we got into town. Dinner was chicken, mushroom and leek penne with corn cobs and caesar salad followed by chocolate cake and ice-cream!

Day 2 CQ2012 Gayndah to Biggenden

Sunday September 9, 2012

We got away just after 7am and had a good 65km ride to Biggenden where we pulled up at the local supermarket for a chocolate milk. My legs were sore from yesterday's effort but it was a good kind of sore. The lunch stop was at a private property where we all laid around on the grass and ate spicy tandoori chicken wraps prepared by the catering company that travels with us.

I went to the bike workshop in the afternoon and learnt about bike set up, riding technique and what to put on a sore bum; LB went to the pub and had a couple of beers!

How about this! Who parked their kombi in the middle of the camping ground?! It's a tent!! Classic.

Day 1 CQ2012 Gayndah Loop

Saturday September 8, 2012

Left home early and arrived in Gayndah around 9.30.

Caught up with LB, found my tent and went and registered.

The camp at Gayndah.

All kitted out and ready to head off to the start line.

On the start line - it took ages to get this photo taken; the very nice man who offered to take it kept turning the camera off or switching it so it faced him! We finally got there.

While waiting in a queue at the park toilets I was stunned to see my Grade 2 and 3 teacher walk past; I couldn't believe my eyes. The woman is 70 and first got on a bike in January and was stoked when she made it around the block and thrilled when she completed her first 6.5km ride. If that's not inspiration, what is?

Actually - this is....Drew sent me a quote an hour before the starting hooter went off -

"I'd rather be standing at the top of the hill that I just dominated unable to breathe, ready to puke, hair matted to my forehead, than at the bottom wondering what it would feel like"....

Two hours later, I totally knew what it meant. We rolled along in the crowd for a while - then hit the Gayndah range - 1.6km of 9% gradient. I counted, I gasped, I gritted my teeth, my quads and glutes burned and over and over again I chanted in my head "puke and hair, puke and hair" and I just didn't stop. I watched the metres on my speedo slowly climb as I inched my way up. 1km to go, 700m to go, 500m to go - it was so hard but so worth it to get to the top - unable to breathe, ready to puke and hair matted to my forehead! It was AWESOME!!

We continued on and came across two more nasty little hills, one of them very short but with a peak of 18% (someone with a Garmin told us later) - I thought there was something wrong with my bike! It was cruel. Somehow I got to the top - invoked "puke and hair" again and just dug deep.

When we weren't riding up hills it was really quite pleasant countryside - thousands of citrus trees, lots of smoke from surrounding fires and no wind.

LB took this photo at the afternoon tea stop; it's a favourite.

After 57km off bitumen we arrived back in Gayndah, sore and satisfied and amazed at what we'd achieved. That range was a killer; LB estimated that 75% of the riders actually walked up.

Other Stuff

Week gone quickly, cattle in yard again several times; same old same old. They've been moved now though and left behind broken trees, broken sprinklers and holes in the lawn. No point getting hot under the collar. Meg thinks it looks kind of cool; I don't.

I rode 30km Tuesday with Kat and Kirsty; beautiful day for a ride. Haven't ridden since - saving my energy for tomorrow's hill!

I managed to get everything done at work that needed doing - monthly reports, awa bookings for conference, organised the bookings and accom for the group meeting at end of Ssept, ops presentation and the regular day to day admin requirements. Gibbo flew to CQ and back today for an inspection, Meg is home for the weekend to attend a photography course at small town and Drewy is in Brisbane.

I'm packed and ready to go although feeling too tired to ride - hope I pick up a bit tomorrow, especially in anticipation of the first big hill at about 20km!

See you on the other side!

Baby Bro

AJB checks in now and again. I get a random message and a few photos then he disappears again! He's turned up in Cairns now; he survived Palmerville and the Old Coach Rd from Maytown to Laura. He sends Mum a memory stick of videos of his adventures; he talks to her on them and shows her what he's doing and where he's camping; she plays them over and over again. I watched a few last weekend; it was good to see him.

Riding

I went out for a ride after the kids left. I rode 60km and could have done more but it started to get a bit late to be out on the road. It was 4 o'clock when I got back; there were long shadows about. My ancient iPod died after 1 and 1/2 hours of great shuffled songs; I ride faster when there's music to match the pedalling to. After a little while of silence I plugged into the iPod on my phone - except I only have two songs on it! Hahaha. I heard them 4 times each and now know every single word and nuance and inflection - Pink's Who Knew and Hunters and Collectors' Throw Your Arms Around Me.

The kids are in Tba (Drew is in the spa!); Meg is packing her gear for tomorrow (a presentation is involved); Gibbo is in bed (he has a 2.30am start to be at the chiller in time to see the carcases go through and pick the meat for the dinner and competition at this year's conference) and I'm falling asleep on the couch, too tired to get up and move! A great day.

What We Did

We had a fun weekend, just like I knew we would!

Saturday morning Meg, Drew and I went to town to do jobs. There's always jobs. Meg and I went to the sports shop; she bought me a new head band/ear warmer. Just what I'd been looking for. Thanks Meg. We went to visit the doctor to discuss what vaccinations Drew will need before his immersion trip to India in November. Lots of them actually. Well, four. In a stroke of luck we actually got to see our GP who did the medical and vaccinations for the Canada trip (and also was on duty the night we ended up at the hospital a few weeks ago). He and his family are contemplating a trip to India so he was well versed with the extra medications Drew should take with him. I had to throw my weight around (hahaha) to actually get the appointment ; dug my heels in and didn't give in like I usually do.

After that we went and visited my parents. I saw some videos of Andrew's adventures; they were entertaining. We picked up bottles that they've been saving for us to make our relishes and jams for Christmas gifts this year. Mate and I swapped $50 - gifts to each other for Fathers Day and my birthday.

After unpacking the shopping at home, Drew and I went to the farm to help Gibbo while Meg stayed home.

Drew had to stay up late both nights he was home to complete a 1200 word essay on peacekeeping missions in Sudan. He finished it last night. He scored another 7 for the first assignment of this semester (Anthropology). It's hard to admonish him for partying too hard when he keeps producing good results.

Today was fun. We had breakfast together then all went outside. Meg and Gibbo mixed feed (she caretakes 2 chooks in Tba and took back enough food to feed them for the next 10 years); Drew scrubbed and cleaned my water dishes then watered the vege garden. I tidied it up a bit, ready for some spring planting (which I probably should have already done by now).

Over lunch we discussed my impending birthday. The one where I turn 50! Should we have a party or not? Half of me wants to (the half that would like to see some people I haven't seen for a while) and half of me doesn't want to (the introvert in me, the being that craves intense moments of solitude and gets agitated in a crowd and doesn't like any fuss). We talked about what to eat, what to drink, when to have it, who to invite. I only have a pocketful of friends but once we started listing names we ended up at 50 in no time. Haha. 50. There's that number again! It will be the No Fuss No Frills Fiftieth at the New Farm. Marinated wagyu and wagyu mince balls for entree; wagyu burgers for lunch (with salad, coleslaw and onion) and mini pavlovas for dessert. No Fuss. No Frills. No Drama. No Big Deal. Emphasis on the people, not on having everything looking "perfect" - and as we're not living at the farm yet it doesn't have to be "perfect" because it's all a work in progress. Now I'm up to 65.

Just before we all split to go our separate ways after lunch we had a photo session. I love photo sessions. Gibbo and Coco (farm dog extraordinaire) went to the farm; Meg and Drew went to Toowoomba (she will drive him back to Uni in the morning before backtracking to training at Wacol) and I went riding.

I love my babies. And they both love the camera!

Happy Fathers Day

While we were at the farm yesterday Meg stayed home and made this. Gibbo's all time favourite dessert is strawberry cheesecake. His sister Desley makes it occasionally for him and I've made it maybe 4 times in 25 years (?). It was perfect, the best he's ever had! It was very, very good! We had it last night after ox tail casserole.

She also made an oreo cheesecake - it was good but not as good as the strawberry one!

Jill R gave us these oranges last week; they're the sweetest, juiciest ones I've had in years. I juiced them this morning for our Fathers Day Breakfast.

Meg made coffee.

A lovely breakfast together!

More Pruning

and a bit of tidying up in preparation for a party that may or may not happen in a few weeks.

Once (as in yesterday morning) there were three palm trees growing right here. We've lived with palm trees for the last 10 years and found them to be nothing but trouble - so they've gone. A second reason to move them is that we want to put a second tank in next to the existing one.

Gibbo borrowed a nifty machine - a stump grinder. Nasty bit of gear. Grinds so that there's nothing at all left.

Drew mowed and Poofy helped.

We made four trips to the dump and have at least another four to go.

Meg stayed home and made yummies for dessert.
