The Kids are Home

No, not those ones - the other ones, Rusty and Rosie - and they've grown.

Jude made them a hutch. They're going to live up in the pig enclosure soon.

Look at the size of the lambs! Their tails still haven't fallen off.

Operation Relocation

The ill-mannered pair have been relocated to my chook compound - where they proceeded to tear around and inspect and jump up on everything.

The roosters in the pens below were totally freaked out by the four legger walking across the top of their pen and then jumping on the corrugated iron. In fact, the rooster on the far end went into hysterics and was running from front to back and jumping up, hitting his head again and again on the mesh - which bounced up in the air each time he hit it which made him even more berserk.

He knows there's something in there but he doesn't know what. He just wanted to knock it over.

Here he is, scraping his foot again and again on the top of the drum - just like his mother used to do.

Or course Madam was appalled at such behaviour; she sat quietly beside me. Actually, I think she was a little freaked out. These goats have certainly got some attitude now.

Butter wouldn't melt!

Mischief, thy name is Goat

It hasn't taken the two kids long to discover the front verandah; they like to play there in the morning sunshine.

Yesterday, Rusty found a riding glove just sitting around, waiting to be chewed and sucked on. He threw it up in the air and shook it from side to side. Then he flung it to the floor when he couldn't get any milk out of it.

Rusty and Ruby

Meg has named the goats - Rusty and Ruby. They love to run around and act the goat (sorry).

That's not a goat. Chloe would never act the goat. She's much too refined for that.

Coco runs and plays with them, trying to boss them around.

Orphans

It happened. They're Orphans. Peppie didn't make it. Her final resting place is at the foot of the tall single bottle tree at the top of the farm. She can watch over us forever now. Here Lies Pepper. A Goat Who Was Loved.

Baby News

Overnight Friday, Peppie finally had her kids - 3 of them - a tan boy and two smaller black girls, each with a white blaze on their foreheads. Mother Nature decided that the first little one wasn't strong enough to hold on and she died early Saturday morning. The two remaining kids are funny and, of course, very cute.

However, in the last 36 hours there has been a disastrous turn of events. As I sit and write, Pepper is up in the compound, wrapped in a blanket and barely clinging to life. It appears she developed a combination of toxaemia and milk fever while we were away and she's not in very good shape. We've treated her as much as we can; the rest is up to the God of Goats. We can only hope that she pulls through; Meg is absolutely devastated that her beloved Pepper is in such a bad way.

The two little ones have moved down to the garage and are sleeping pretty on a sheepskin rug and drinking from a bottle. They may well be orphans by sunrise.

Fit to Burst

Poor Peppie. Every day we think she's going to give birth. Every day she doesn't. Surely, soon. How many do you think?

Big Red and Rosie Find a Home

Big Red and Rosie have left home and moved across the way a little to a family with 4 kids and numerous other pets. They have a great little shed of their own which includes a goat milking setup; just perfect for Rosie.

Big Red didn't miss a beat; he put himself into and out of the trailer and walked straight to the new feed bin and started eating. He was still feeding his face when we left; Rosie was a little stressed at her new environment but she'll be ok. She has Big Red to look after her and will soon have a kid or two herself to look after.

Big Red loves a scratch; Meg obliged.

Still eating when we left.....

It was all too much for Rosie; she needed a quick rest.

Poor Little Big Red

PLBR continues to be ostracised by Pepper; Rosie appears to be a little more kind - she shared her grain with him for a few seconds yesterday until Peppie saw what was going on and chased him away. We've been giving them some time in the turkey/duck run where the grass is growing fresh and green.
